How the PR Nerd Fast Course Score works

The score estimates how much a course and its typical race-day weather slow you down, as a percent of your finish time. A perfectly flat, sea-level course on a cool, calm, dry morning would score 100. Every 1% of estimated slowdown takes 20 points off.

  • Hills: about 2% added to your finish time for every 1,000 feet of climbing. Courses that finish lower than they start get a smaller credit, because downhills don't give back everything the climbs cost.
  • Heat and humidity: based on typical race-morning temperature and dew point. The fastest marathon times happen in cool weather, roughly 40 to 50°F.
  • Wind: a small penalty for windy race weeks.
  • Altitude: about 4% for every 1,000 meters of average course elevation above about 1,650 feet, for runners who live near sea level.

Courses that drop 1,500 feet or more are marked as downhill specialty courses and aren't ranked with normal courses. That's the same line the B.A.A. now uses to add time to Boston qualifying marks run on big downhill courses.

FAQ

What is the fastest marathon in the U.S.?

By the PR Nerd Fast Course Score, the top-ranked courses are Mesa Marathon (100), Steamtown Marathon (97), Houston Marathon (93). The best course for you also depends on when you want to race and where you live.

Why doesn't the race with the highest BQ rate rank first?

A race's Boston qualifying rate reflects its field as much as its course. Races with a reputation as BQ races attract runners who are already close to qualifying. The Fast Course Score only measures the course and its typical weather.

Does altitude really matter that much?

For runners who live near sea level, yes. VO2 max drops steadily as altitude rises. If you live and train at altitude, you'll lose much less, so treat the altitude part of the score as a comparison for visitors.

How accurate are the time estimates?

They're estimates for a typical race day, meant for comparing courses. A warm or windy year can change everything, so always check the forecast and adjust your race plan.

Scores are estimates based on typical conditions and published course data from RunDida, with Boston qualifying rates from Find My Marathon. Race dates, courses, and field sizes change, so check each race's official website before you register.
