Head to Head

Suunto Race 2 vs Suunto Race 3S

This one comes down to size. The Race 2 is the bigger watch, with more battery, better water resistance, and a lower price. The Race 3S is the compact one, with titanium and sapphire standard, built for runners who want a lighter, smaller watch on their wrist.

The Full Story

The Race 2 jumps to a 2,000-nit, 120Hz AMOLED display and stretches dual-band GPS battery life to 55 hours, all in a thinner, lighter case available in steel or titanium. New AI Coach guidance, Training Stress Score, and a unified Recovery Score bring Suunto's training smarts much closer to Garmin's, without losing the lightweight, racing-first feel the Race series built its name on.

The Race 3S takes everything that made the Race S a hit for smaller wrists and upgrades nearly all of it: a titanium bezel and sapphire glass, a 2,000-nit AMOLED display (up from 600), 38 hours of dual-band GPS (up from 30), 64GB of storage for free global offline maps, and Suunto's new AI Coach. The watch head weighs just 38 grams. It still skips a speaker, ECG, and NFC payments, and at $599 it costs a lot more than the Race S it replaces.

Two Suunto Race Watches, Two Different Sizes

The Race 2 and Race 3S share a lot: bright 2,000-nit AMOLED screens, dual-band GPS, free offline maps, and Suunto's AI Coach. The real decision is size. The Race 2 is Suunto's full-size racing watch. The Race 3S is the compact version, built for smaller wrists and runners who want a lighter watch.

Here's the surprise: the newer Race 3S costs more, at $599 vs $499 for the Race 2.

Battery Life: The Race 2 Wins

The Race 2 is rated for up to 55 hours of dual-band GPS. The Race 3S is rated for up to 38. Both are plenty for marathon training, but if you run ultras, go multiple days between charges, or just never want to think about your battery, the bigger Race 2 has the edge. A bigger case simply fits a bigger battery.

Size and Comfort: The Race 3S Wins

The Race 3S has a 46mm case, compared to 49mm on the Race 2, and it's noticeably lighter. That makes a real difference if you have smaller wrists, wear your watch to sleep, or just don't like a big watch bouncing around on easy runs. The Race 2 is a large watch, and it wears like one.

Build Quality

Every Race 3S comes with a titanium bezel and sapphire glass. The Race 2 comes in steel or titanium versions, so you'll pay more to get titanium on the bigger watch. Sapphire is much more scratch resistant than standard watch glass, which is a nice bonus on the 3S if you run trails.

Water Resistance

The Race 2 is rated 10 ATM, while the Race 3S is rated 5 ATM. Both are fine for swimming. The Race 2's higher rating gives you a little more peace of mind for water sports, but neither is a dive watch.

Training Features

Training-wise, these watches are very close. Both run Suunto's AI Coach, training load, and recovery tools, and both support SuuntoPlus sport apps. Neither has a speaker for calls, ECG, or NFC payments in the US. If you're choosing between them, you're choosing a size and a battery, not a feature set.

Which One Should You Buy?

Get the Race 2 if you want the most battery and the best value. It's $100 cheaper, lasts much longer, and has a higher water rating. If you don't mind a bigger watch, it's the better deal.

Get the Race 3S if comfort and size matter more than battery. It's the better choice for smaller wrists, sleep tracking, and anyone who wants a premium, lightweight watch with titanium and sapphire standard.
